Immaculate Heart of Mary,

Discipleship on Jesus Christ requires action. Words are insufficient. To better understand the context of today’s parable, we must know the reason why Jesus offers his teaching. After seeing Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, his overturning the tables in the temple, and his continued curing of the blind and lame, the religious authorities are jealous and angry. They question Jesus’ authority: How can this man act in the way that he does? Knowing this background gives us fuller insight into the two sons of today’s parable. While the first son initially rejects the command to tend the vineyard, he experiences a conversion of heart and goes out to steward the land. There are the people Jesus has been associating with to the dismay of the religious authorities. Contrastingly, the religious authorities are like the second son who says “yes” but does not follow up with action. The second reading from Paul’s letter to the community at Philippi beautifully outlines the way of life that discipleship demands: love, compassion, mercy, unity, and humility. We must remember however, that this is not simply a random list of qualities or characteristics—they are the very things Christ modeled by his life. Christ exemplifies humility. This is the same humility required of the first son who changed his mind and went out to the vineyard. This is the same humility required of each of us to admit when we are wrong and in need of a change of heart. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.

Tras ver la entrada triunfal de Jesús en Jerusalén, su volcar las mesas en el templo y su continua curación de ciegos y cojos, las autoridades religiosas se mostraron celosas y enfadadas. Cuestionan la autoridad de Jesús: ¿Cómo puede este hombre actuar de la manera en que lo hace? Conocer este trasfondo nos da una visión más completa de los dos hijos de la parábola actual. Aunque el primogénito rechaza inicialmente la orden de cuidar el viñedo, experimenta una conversión de corazón y sale a cuidar la tierra. Están las personas con las que Jesús se ha estado relacionando, para disgusto de las autoridades religiosas. En contraste, las autoridades religiosas son como el segundo hijo que dice "sí" pero no responde con la acción. La segunda lectura de la carta de Pablo a la comunidad de Filipos describe de forma hermosa el modo de vida que exige el discipulado; amor, compasión, misericordia, unidad y humildad. Sin embargo, debemos recordar que esta no es simplemente una lista al azar de cualidades o características—son precisamente las cosas que Cristo modeló en su vida. Cristo ejemplifica la humildad. Esta es la misma humildad que se requiere del primer hijo que cambió de opinión y salió al viñedo. Esta es la misma humildad que cada uno de nosotros requiere admitir cuando estamos equivocados y necesitamos un cambio de opinión. Inmaculado Corazón de María, ruega por nosotros.
