Dear Families and Friends of

Immaculate Heart of Mary,

We are often quick to create divisions and distinctions that are not of God. And if we are honest, the “us” versus “them” mentality is present all around us. Even Jesus is guilty of this for moment in today’s gospel when he denies the Canaanite woman by saying, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” It makes logical sense. This woman was a Gentile, a non-Jew. Also, the fact that Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon suggests he is seeking some respite by entering non-Jewish territory. He was probably tired and ready for a break from all the attention, so much so that he ignores and even cruelly dismisses the woman. Jesus’ own bias and prejudices remind us of Jesus’ humanity. But Jesus was deeply moved by the woman’s persistent faith. Not only was a non- Jewish person willing to challenge Jesus, but she was a woman who was willing to challenge Jesus. Just like Jesus’ interaction with the woman from Samaria, this would have defied all social norms and conventions. Jesus is coming to realize that his salvific mission is for all people, not just the Jews. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.

A menudo somos rápidos en crear divisiones y distinciones que no son de Dios. Y si somos sinceros, la mentalidad de "nosotros" contra "ellos" está presente a nuestro alrededor. Incluso Jesús es culpable de esto por un momento en el evangelio de hoy, cuando niega a la mujer cananea diciendo: "Solo fui enviado a las ovejas perdidas de la casa de Israel." Tiene sentido lógico. Esta mujer era gentil, no judía. Además, el hecho de que Jesús se retirara a la región de Tiro y Sidón sugiere que buscaba algo de alivio entrando en territorio no judío. Probablemente estaba cansado y listo para un descanso de toda la atención, tanto que ignora e incluso desestima cruelmente a la mujer.Los propios prejuicios de Jesús nos recuerdan la humanidad de Jesús. Pero Jesús se conmovió profundamente por la fe persistente de la mujer. No solo una persona no judía estaba dispuesta a desafiar a Jesús, sino que era una mujer dispuesta a desafiar a Jesús.
