Immaculate Heart of Mary,

When Jesus stood amid the disciples, he did not accuse them of abandonment during his passion. Nor does he show signs of anger or resentment for the way he had been treated. Instead , Jesus offers a rather unexpected greeting: “Peace.” There are times when we want to show that we have the upper hand. We want to prove to others that we were right and they were wrong. We want to come out on top. But this isn’t the way of Christ. Fully aware of all that had happened to him, including deception and desertion, Jesus offers another way. Jesus offers this same peace to each of us. When he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit,” Jesus invites the disciples into the work of creation. Just as God breathed life into the first beings of Genesis, God now breathes this life into the disciples and each of us. We have the responsibility to collaborate with God in the act of creation, of building up God’s kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven. Paul reminds us there are many types of gifts but the same Spirit. We will not all build God’s kingdom in the exact same way, but we all have an important role to play. This sending is a central image of today’s celebration of Pentecost. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.

Cuando Jesús estuvo entre los discípulos, no les acusó de abandono durante su pasión. Tampoco muestra signos de ira o resentimiento por el trato que le han hecho. En cambio, Jesús ofrece un saludo bastante inesperado: "Paz." Hay momentos en los que queremos demostrar que tenemos la superioridad. Queremos demostrar a los demás que nosotros teníamos razón y ellos estaban equivocados. Queremos salir victoriosos. Pero este no es el camino de Cristo. Plenamente consciente de todo lo que le había ocurrido, incluyendo el engaño y la deserción, Jesús ofrece otro camino. Jesús ofrece esta misma paz a cada uno de nosotros. Cuando soplaba sobre ellos y decía: «Recibid el Espíritu Santo», Jesús invita a los discípulos a la obra de la creación. Así como Dios insufló vida a los primeros seres del Génesis, ahora Dios insufló esta vida a los discípulos y a cada uno de nosotros. Tenemos la responsabilidad de colaborar con Dios en el acto de creación, de edificar el reino de Dios aquí en la tierra como en el cielo. Pablo nos recuerda que hay muchos tipos de dones pero el mismo Espíritu. No todos construiremos el reino de Dios exactamente de la misma manera, pero todos tenemos un papel importante que desempeñar.
