Immaculate Heart of Mary,

Notice how the gospel begins: “When Jesus heard about the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself.” Jesus probably wanted some time to grieve the loss of his cousin and friend. Even so, “His heart was move with pity for them and he cured their sick.” Rather than choosing anger or retaliation, Jesus cares for others in their time of need. This certainly does not suggest that people do not need time to grieve. Grief is important and necessary. It does show, however, that Jesus chooses love and compassion, rather than retaliation. Today’s gospel is also somewhat terrifying. When the disciples approached Jesus and told him to release the crowds, they probably did not expect the answer they received. Rather than dismissing the crowds or working some sort of miracle, Jesus simply says: “Give them some food yourselves.” This is almost like a pre-missioning missioning of the disciples. Fortunately, Jesus does intervene and the thousands are satisfied. Like those disciples, we all have a role to play in bringing about God’s kingdom on earth. The prophet Isaiah tells of God’s care for God’s people, “All you who are thirsty, come to the water! You who have no money come, receive grain and eat.” But God works through us. Saint Teresa of Avila, a prominent Spanish mystic, wrote, “Christ has no body now but yours, no hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes with which he looks with compassion on this world.” God trusts and empowers us to do God’s work. Let us make this prayer our own today. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.

Fíjate cómo comienza el evangelio: "Cuando Jesús se enteró de la muerte de Juan el Bautista, se retiró en barca a un lugar desierto él solo." Probablemente Jesús quería tiempo para llorar la pérdida de su primo y amigo. Aun así, "Su corazón se movió con compasión por ellos y curó a sus enfermos." En lugar de elegir la ira o la represalia, Jesús se preocupa por los demás en su momento de necesidad. Esto ciertamente no significa que la gente no necesite tiempo para llorar. El duelo es importante y necesario. Sin embargo, muestra que Jesús elige el amor y la compasión, en lugar de la represalia. El evangelio de hoy también resulta algo aterrador. Cuando los discípulos se acercaron a Jesús y le dijeron que soltara a la multitud, probablemente no esperaban la respuesta que recibieron. En lugar de desestimar a las multitudes o realizar algún tipo de milagro, Jesús simplemente dice: "Dadles algo de comida vosotros mismos." Esto es casi como una misión previa a la misión de los discípulos. Por suerte, Jesús interviene y los miles quedan satisfechos. Como esos discípulos, todos tenemos un papel que desempeñar en traer el reino de Dios en la tierra. El profeta Isaías habla del cuidado de Dios por su pueblo: "¡Todos los que tenéis sed, venid al agua! Vosotros, que no tenéis dinero, venid y recibid grano y comed." Pero Dios obra a través de nosotros. Santa Teresa de Ávila, destacada mística española, escribió: "Cristo no tiene ahora cuerpo más que el tuyo, ni manos, ni pies en la tierra que no sean los tuyos. Tus ojos son los que él muestra compasión en este mundo.” Dios confía en nosotros y nos capacita para hacer la obra de Dios. Hagamos nuestro pago hoy mismo.
