Immaculate Heart of Mary,

Our faith in Christ cannot be individualist, but it must be personal. As Christians, we are indeed a community of believers that spans centuries and across the entire globe. But one’s belief in Christ must also be deeply personal.When Jesus asks Peter, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” He does not stop there. Rather, Jesus asks Peter specifically, “Who do you say that I am?” When it comes down to it, we cannot simply know about Jesus. We must know Jesus. It is this relationship with Jesus that allows Peter to confidently proclaim, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And it is from this relationship that Jesus’ trust of Peter stems, to whom he gives the keys to the kingdom of heaven. This may seem like an unlikely choice. Peter has failed Jesus in the past and he will continue to do so moving forward. Jesus, however, sees something in Peter that perhaps Peter cannot yet see in himself. One of the most simultaneously joyful and challenging realities of the church is that it is made up of humans. Of course, it is God who calls and sustains, but it is an institution comprised of people—people who sometimes make poor, even hurtful choices. May Peter’s example give us hope that God works among and through our humanness and may it inspire us to put our trust in what is divine. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.

Imaculado Corazon de Maria,

Nuestra fe en Cristo no puede ser individualista, pero debe ser personal. Como cristianos, somos en efecto una comunidad de creyentes que abarca siglos y en todo el mundo. Pero una creencia en Cristo también debe ser profundamente personal. Cuando Jesús le pregunta a Pedro: «¿Quién dice la gente que es el Hijo del Hombre? No se queda ahí. Más bien, Jesús le pregunta específicamente a Pedro: "¿Quién dices que soy? Al final, no podemos simplemente conocer a Jesús. Debemos conocer a Jesús. Es esta relación con Jesús la que permite a Pedro proclamar con confianza: «Tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo del Dios viviente». Y es de esta relación de donde nace la confianza de Jesús en Pedro, a quien le entrega las llaves del reino de los cielos. Esto puede parecer una elección poco probable. Pedro ha fallado a Jesús en el pasado y seguirá haciéndolo en el futuro. Sin embargo, Jesús ve algo en Pedro que quizás Pedro aún no puede ver en sí mismo. Una de las realidades más alegres y desafiantes de la iglesia es que está compuesta por humanos. Por supuesto, es Dios quien llama y sostiene, pero es una institución compuesta por personas—personas que a veces toman decisiones malas, incluso hirientes. Que el ejemplo de Pedro nos da esperanza de que Dios actúa entre y a través de nuestra humanidad y que nos inspire a confiar en lo divino. Inmaculado Corazón de María, ruega por nosotros.
