Immaculate Heart of Mary,

As we approach the end of the liturgical year, our readings are filled with images of the end times. While this parable might seem unusual to today’s audience, it would have accurately described a wedding ceremony in Jesus’ time. While the general time of the wedding was known, the ceremony itself could be hours or even days away. It was totally dependent on the arrival of the bridegroom. Waiting was necessary, as we remain vigilant for the arrival of the bridegroom so we are prepared. In sharing this parable, Jesus makes two significant points. First, we do not know the hour of judgment. We must be constantly prepared by doing our best to live lives of holiness, justice, and peace. We cannot wait until tomorrow to do the work we are called to do today. Second, just as the wise virgins did not share their oil, we cannot rely on the faith of others as a substitute for our own. While we certainly support each other as a community of believers, we must each take an active role in building the kingdom of God while we have the opportunity. The first reading from the book of Wisdom contains beautiful imagery that speaks to waiting and preparedness: Whoever clings to wisdom and keeps vigil for her sake shall be free from all care. Wisdom, like faith, is a gift from God. We make the decision to either accept or reject this gift. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.

A medida que nos acercamos al final del año litúrgico, nuestras lecturas se llenan de imágenes de los tiempos finales. Aunque esta parábola pueda parecer inusual para el público actual, habría descrito con precisión una ceremonia de boda en la época de Jesús. Aunque se conocía la hora general de la boda, la ceremonia podía estar dentro de una hora o incluso días. Dependía totalmente de la llegada del novio. Es necesario esperar, ya que estamos atentos a la llegada del novio para no estar desprevenidos. Al compartir esta parábola, Jesús hace dos puntos importantes.
