Immaculate Heart of Mary,

As we reach the halfway point of Advent, the readings for today seem less focused on preparation and more on enduring the wait. God is coming, but not quite yet. John the Baptist, seen last week as a fiery preacher, seems particularly impatient—is Jesus the expected messiah or is he not? This week is an invitation to re-engage with Advent, regardless of how we’ve done thus far. Proclaiming these readings, we get to remind the congregation that we still have (almost) two weeks of Advent left, even if their minds are already on Christmas. On the other hand, we also get to reassure them that God will arrive in time, even if God seems far off at the moment. The season of Advent holds both of these truths together—the fullness of God’s kingdom is coming, but it’s also not quite here yet. For now, we wait, but God will be here soon enough. Gaudete Sunday invites us to consider the “here” but “not yet” of God’s kingdom. While God is present and active in our lives today, we wait for and work for the time when God will reign in fullness. We must acknowledge that we are indeed always in God’s presence yet commit ourselves to the justice we have heard about this Advent season. There will be a time when hatred and division and war will be no more. And that is indeed reason to rejoice! Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.

Imaculado Corazon de Maria,

Al llegar a la mitad del Adviento, las lecturas de hoy parecen menos centradas en la preparación y más en soportar la espera. Dios viene, pero aún no. Juan el Bautista, visto la semana pasada como un predicador apasionado, parece especialmente impaciente—¿es Jesús el mesías esperado o no? Esta semana es una invitación a reconectar con el Adviento, independientemente de cómo nos haya ido hasta ahora. Proclamando estas lecturas, podemos recordar a la congregación que aún nos quedan (casi) dos semanas de Adviento, aunque ya estén pensadas en la Navidad. Por otro lado, también podemos tranquilizarles diciéndoles que Dios llegará a tiempo, aunque en ese momento parezca lejos. La temporada del Adviento mantiene juntas ambas verdades: la plenitud del reino de Dios está llegando, pero tampoco está del todo aquí todavía. Por ahora, esperamos, pero Dios llegará pronto. El domingo de Gaudete nos invita a considerar el "aquí" pero "aún no" del reino de Dios. Mientras Dios está presente y activo en nuestras vidas hoy, esperamos y trabajamos para el momento en que Dios reine en plenitud. Debemos reconocer que, en efecto, siempre estamos en presencia de Dios, pero comprometernos con la justicia que hemos escuchado en esta temporada de Adviento. Llegará un momento en que el odio, la división y la guerra no serán más. ¡Y eso es, sin duda, motivo para alegrarse! Inmaculado Corazón de María, ruega por nosotros.
