Immaculate Heart of Mary,

When Jesus saw the crowds, he was moved with compassion. The Greek word for compassion in this context suggests more than a fickle feeling or sentimental reaction. Rather, the compassion Matthew describes comes from the deepest pit of Jesus’ being. And what was it about the crowds that moved Jesus so deeply? They were troubled and abandoned like sheep without a shepherd. But instead of simply continuing his own teaching and preaching and healing, Jesus summons his apostles to go out into the world and do his work. While it may seem that Jesus is simply delegating, he is making an important statement. We all have the responsibility to participate in the preaching, teaching and healing of Christ. Like the first apostles, we are all called to be part of the mission. Similarly, like the first apostles, we must have faith. You can imagine that the apostles might have felt inadequate or unprepared for the task Jesus gave them. We might even feel the same intimidation or trepidation. But it is faith that moves us forward and faith that guides our way. We pray that we might have the faith to respond to God’s calling in our lives today, not ignoring our fear or apprehensions but trusting that God will provide and care for us throughout the process. Imaculado Corazon de Maria,

Cuando Jesús vio a las multitudes, se conmovió con compasión. La palabra griega para compasión en este contexto sugiere más que un sentimiento voluble o una reacción sentimental. Más bien, la compasión que describe Mateo proviene del más profundo ser de Jesús. ¿Y qué fue lo que conmovió tanto a Jesús en las multitudes? Estaban inquietos y abandonados como ovejas sin pastor. Pero en lugar de simplemente continuar con su propia enseñanza, predicación y sanación, Jesús convoca a sus apóstoles para que salgan al mundo y hagan su obra.
