Immaculate Heart of Mary,

God will be with us in all the trials we face—maybe not as we expect, but God will be there. In the first reading, Elijah is on the run from Ahab and Jezebel, who seek his life, and takes shelter in a cave. While God was not in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire, God was there, in a tiny whispering sound. Elijah recognizes God’s presence and hides his face. Likewise, as the disciples in the boat fear for their safety, Jesus appears to them walking on water. Initially, they believe Jesus to be a ghost, but they come to recognize Jesus and his authority over the wind and the sea. How does God get your attention? In big ways or small ones? Is God direct or subtle? Does God have a sense of humor? God appears to each of us differently, making use of our own idiosyncrasies. Elijah and Peter have different experiences of God because they are different people in different circumstances. God desires to be with each of us, too, reaching out to us in our own unique ways. Silence can be intimidating if we are not used to it. Let us take comfort in Jesus’ words to Peter and the disciples: “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Just as God was present to Elijah in the silence, God is present to us when we still our hearts and listen with intentionality. Imaculado Corazon de Maria,

Dios estará con nosotros en todas las pruebas que enfrentemos—quizá no como esperamos, pero sí allí. En la primera lectura, Elías huye de Acab y Jezabel, que buscan su vida y se refugia en una cueva. Aunque Dios no estaba en el viento, en el terremoto o en el fuego, Dios estaba allí, en un pequeño susurro. Elías reconoce la presencia de Dios y oculta su rostro. De igual manera, mientras los discípulos en la barca temen por su seguridad, Jesús se les aparece caminando sobre el agua. Al principio, creen que Jesús es un fantasma, pero llegan a reconocer a Jesús y su autoridad sobre el viento y el mar. ¿Cómo llama Dios tu atención? ¿En grandes o en pequeñas cosas? ¿Es Dios directo o sutil? ¿Tiene Dios sentido del humor? Dios se nos aparece a cada uno de nosotros de forma diferente, aprovechando nuestras propias idiosincrasias. Elías y Pedro tienen experiencias diferentes con Dios porque son personas distintas en distintas circunstancias. Dios desea estar con cada uno de nosotros también, extendiéndose hacia nosotros a nuestra manera única. El silencio puede ser intimidante si no estamos acostumbrados. Consolémonos en las palabras de Jesús a Pedro y a los discípulos: “Tened valor, soy yo; No tengas miedo.” Así como Dios estuvo presente para Elías en el silencio, Dios está presente para nosotros cuando calmamos nuestro corazón y escuchamos con intencionalidad.
