Immaculate Heart of Mary,

Americans have an uncomfortable relationship with kings. The American Revolution was fought for independence from King George, after all. Nonetheless, today every Catholic church around the world celebrates the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Today’s feast invites us to look beyond our national loyalty and rejoice in our primary identity. We are children of God in Jesus, Christ the King. Our readings help us consider what it’s like to belong to God’s kingdom. The book of Samuel captures the deep longing of the Israelites for a king to shepherd them. Saint Paul reminds the Colossians that we belong to the kingdom of Christ, whose power he praises in a beautiful hymn. Finally, Luke’s Gospel calls to mind the kind of king Jesus chooses to be—a suffering servant, a man for others. By sacrificing his life for us, Jesus throws open the gates of Paradise. Today’s Gospel paints in stark contrast the power of imperial Rome, which brooks no challenges to its rule, and the “kingly” ways of Jesus that rest forgiveness and love. Even as it appears the former may win out, the gospel makes it utterly clear that Jesus’s merciful rule cannot be extinguished by death. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.

Imaculado Corazon de Maria,

Los estadounidenses tienen una relación incomoda con los reyes. La Revolución Estadounidense se peleó para lograr la independencia del Rey Jorge, después de todo. Sin embargo, hoy cada iglesia católica alrededor del mundo celebra la Solemnidad del Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, Rey del Universo. La celebración de hoy de la Iglesia nos invita a ver más allá de nuestras lealtades nacionales y regocijarnos en nuestra primera identidad. Somos hijos de Dios en Jesús, Cristo el Rey. Nuestras lecturas nos ayudan a considerar cómo pertenecer al Reino de Dios. El libro de Samuel captura el profundo anhelo de los israelitas por un rey que los pastoree. San Pablo recuerda a los colosenses que pertenecemos al reino de Cristo, cuyo poder alaba en un hermoso himno. Por último, el Evangelio de Lucas evoca el tipo de rey que Jesús elige ser, un siervo sufriente, un hombre para los demás. Al sacrificar su vida por nosotros, Jesús abre las puertas del Paraíso.
